Wound infection is the most common complication following operation and the incidence of wound infection is still regrettably high. Although only rarely associated with mortality, wound infection causes prolongation of convalescence, unpleasant dressings, ugly scars, increased risk of wound ¢¥breakdown and production of a dangerous locus of infection within the surgical ward.
This study was undertaken to determine the efficacy of high concentration of topical ampicilline in preventing wound infection in 65 cases of gastrointestinal, liver abscess and biliary surgery. And the results were compared with control group.
The results were as follows;
1. Six of the 65 patients who had ampicilline powder in the wound developed wound infection (9.2%) compared with 11 of 47 patients (23.4%) who did not receive topical ampicilline.
2. Bacteria was cultured from pus obtained 5 of 6 infected wounds of treated with topical ampicilline. Every case of infected wound was due to Gram negative bacteria and all the infecting organisms were resistant to ampicilline.
